Toys & Games sourcing FAQ

What safety certifications are required for toys?

EN 71 (Europe), ASTM F963 (USA), and AS/NZS 8124 (Australia). CE marking is mandatory for EU sales. Battery-operated toys need EMC Directive compliance. Always request full test reports from accredited third-party labs (TÜV, SGS, Bureau Veritas) — not manufacturer self-declarations.

What is the typical lead time for custom toy production?

Custom toys requiring new tooling (injection moulding dies, plush patterns): 60–90 days for first production run. Reorders with existing tooling: 30–45 days. Add 4–6 weeks for ocean freight to Europe or North America. Build in time for pre-shipment quality inspection.

How do I protect my toy design?

Register design patents and trademarks in China (and the manufacturing country) before sharing CAD files with manufacturers. Use NDAs. Consider splitting production — have one factory make components, another assemble. Maintain control of the master moulds by having them registered in your name.

What age rating and labelling requirements apply?

All toys must carry appropriate age warnings (e.g., "Not suitable for children under 3 years"). Small parts rules are strict — toys for under-3s must have no parts that fit in a choking hazard cylinder. Country of origin, manufacturer name/address and batch reference must appear on packaging.
